Coast 1: Landscapes

THE ERMITAGE OF 'SAN JUAN DE GAZTELUGATXE'

See the places where the force of the sea erodes the rocks creating impresive shapes. Joined to the coast by a stone bridge, this rocky island has on its top this incredible ermitage dedicated to Saint John. Although it is said to be built during the tenth century by Knight Templars, a fire collapsed it in 1978 and it was rebuilt in 1980.

         THE PAINTED FOREST 'OMA'
A painted pine forest in which geometrical and human shapes are visible from certain places. A work by the Basque painter and sculptor Agustin Ibarrola, it is a really original and different piece.
It is near the caves of  'Santimamiñe'  where some prehistoric paintings from 13000 years ago were discovered by chance in 1916. You are able to visit the cave but not the original paintings; there is a simulation through virtual reality.

MY PROPOSAL:

Put on your trekking shoes or boots, in both places it is necessary to walk the paths to get there.
  • 4 hours trip: Visit only the ermitage (around two hours are needed) and a couple of typical Basque villages, Bermeo and Mundaka, old fishermen villages.
  • 8 hours trip: Visit the ermitage (two hours), the typical Basque village of Mundaka, the painted forest (two hours or a bit more), and take a drink in 'Laida' beach in the mouth of the estuary.
Whatever you would like to ask, please mail me and I will help you to make plans. If you are interested in visiting somewhere else, there will be no problem at all. For further information or to hire me do not hesitate to contact me. I will be glad to answer you.                        javi@taxibilbao.info
